Dear All,

I would like to know if we can use lab grade solvents as working standads for analyzing the routine samples.

Thanks in advance..

It depends on the question you are trying to answer. If you are looking for impurities in the solvents, you will find many. If want to use the solvent as a standard to measure out a portion of it and dilute it for use as a standard solution, you can - but you are limited to the specificationof purity given by the vendor.

If you want to use some ethyl acetate to make up a standard solution to quantify ethyl acetate in pinapple flavoring, are most likely to be OK - unless you need tracability of the standard. If you want to use the ethyl aceate bottle in the lab as a solvent for or reference for acetic acid analysis - no. That can be expected to vary from lot to lot in the solvent, even though all lots may well be within specificaiton.
