floating electric signal

I work on a 450 Varian which has constantly had a floating electronic signal since I started 2 years ago. We are often unable to get a blank could it be the floating signal and/or has anyone else dealt with this issue? The 450 runs dual collumns of Chromosorb PAW60-80, 30 feet X 1/8 inch SS inlet Steel. Loop size is .5cc.

May it be an unshielded/non properly grounded appliance on the same power line?

fid? specifying the detector type would be helpful
