I'm sure this is available somewhere, but I haven't stumbled across it yet. Can anyone point me to a reference that explains the logic behind the myriad of GC injector liner designs available on the market and how to choose the best one for a given application?
Thanks.

Check out restek's website. In their literature section they have an article on using split/splitless injectors that does well to explain many of the different types of liners and what they are used for. I'm sure if you look around on their website you could find more information on on column injection, large volume injectors etc. to explain what is the best liner per application. If you get around their sales pitches you can find some good info on their site.

The hadcopy catalog from Restek also has list of basic benefits/uses for liners. See pages 159-164.

Also can go to the Agilent Website, there you can find some suggestions on the designation and the selection of the liner. But personally I prefer the Restek since one of the important reason is their liners are all deactivated and also have some special liners which are very helpful for example their Siltek liners.....
