Hi,
We are looking to startup a used HP5890 GC and want to find out what "newish' versions of software can be used with this instrument. Any suggestions or advice??
Thanks!

Agilent tech support would be in the best position to answer that.

Agreed. Chemstation software is very picky about what instruments it controls and what computer operating systems can be used. They'll tell you this information for free. I just did it recently.

I tried version B.01.03 and A.10.02 too on a WinXP PC.
I had small problems with both versions with the Sample Info with manual inject. Changes were irregulary not saved at the B.01.03 version. With the A.10.02 Version I get a little Error-Message with the "GCGUI....blabla" but it does all it should. (And I can't find any solution for the nondiscripting error.

)
Because of this I use the A.10.02 Version, newer versions than the B.01.03 I don't like because of their handling of different views (always online and offline version in two windows to take snapshots) and their need of pc ressources.
If you use an autosampler, you can try both versions, maybe the problems just occur when manualy injecting.

Agilent will let you know what they've tried out and verified.
They don't offer up other information what else might work or won't work.

I'd be surprised if Agilent says something more than "that is an obsolete unit; buy a new one, with new software."
I use UniChrom. The interface is very much like Chemstation.

You can use a Windows 7 computer with a 5890 Series II GC. The software is version B.04.03 and just be sure to install the service pack for it. It works great, we have it running 6 5890 GCs in our lab.

HPIB board is not supported in Windows 7, perhaps you can try with other GPIB board, but I don't believe that there is possibility to configure it in ChemStation, maybe through some kind of emulation?

pacerlaser: are you using a USB-GPIB cable for connectivity between your 5890s and the computers?

I realize I am quite late to the party but ...
I am running a 5890 series II in Chemstation B.03.02. Actually I am running it in a virtualized XP machine, using the USB-GPIB adapter. I previously migrated this system from a real system with a PCI-GPIB card (also XP of course).
I also have used a demo version of OpenLab Chemstation edition which is revision C.01.05; This actually still has the drivers for the 5890 (series II). (This is running in a windows 7 VM with the USB-GPIB adapter).
I got a cheap USB adapter on ebay, didn't work. Got the real thing from Newark/element 14, cost an arm and a leg ($500 I think?) but it works and has kept us up and running -- and I got away from using a ten year old pentium 4 with failing hardware...

We just continue using our NT4 computer and A.06 with our 5890.
We had to replace the floppy drive unit last month.
