Assessing performance of preparative columns

I've seen more than one metric used to assess loading:
-The amount of sample that can be loaded without increasing peak width by > 10%
-The amount that can be loaded before breakthrough
How does one evaluate preparative columns for loading capacity, resolution in gradient preparative separations?
