Trying to plumb a 5890/5970 for carrier gas. The 5890 has this:



That's looking down into the side compartment of the 5890.

Is the Swage indicated by the red arrow where it gets plumbed for carrier gas? If not, I'm at a loss as to where one feeds it carrier gas.

Most likely. Are there any other detectors in this instrument or is it MSD only. If MSD only that is probably where carrier goes.

I found the .pdf of the site prep manual for the 5890, and- sure enough- that's the way it is.

Heck of a place to have to get a wrench in to seat a Swagelok fitting. I may have to get a crowsfoot wrench just for this.

That is where it hooks up, and it isn't so bad once you remove that side of the GC. You just have to take the two screws out of the bottom(if no autosampler is on it) and slide it to the rear if I recall correctly. Just tighten with a 7/16" open end wrench, I have done it quite a few times. If you want to make it easier if you plan to move the instrument again, just cut a piece of copper tubing to reach out the back of the GC then put a union on it there, so next time you can just attach the gas lines right at the rear of the instrument.

Just be glad you are not having to hook up two carrier gas lines, two fuel gas lines, two air lines and two makeup gas lines all inside there, it can get to be a mess.

I spent a fair amount of time today trying to find a 7/16" line wrench, so- removing the side is much easier!

And, yeah- the other 5890 is plumbed for FID and NPD. Fortunately, it arrived here pre-plumbed, just connected to the appropriate gases, and it's been humming like a top ever since.
