'Tis true, but a good indy wrench can save lots of money if he or she knows what they're doing. Too bad I'm in NY and know Waters hardware much better than Agilent stuff.

Our needs are beyond regular change of filters and lamps. We need some work bringing units to shape. We are moving to a new facility and I want everything to be perfect

Does Agilent offer any courses teaching rebuild protocols for their instrumentation? If so and you have a mechanically minded chemist on staff, perhaps some coursework, a set of tools, and a little bit of bravery would help in the event you have a hard time finding someone. What I did to get where I am with regard to maintenance and repair of Waters LC's is I first took all of the PM & troubleshooting courses Waters offered, then picked up some junked LC components, tore them down to the chassis, and built them back up into working instruments. I also have a good relationship with the local Waters service staff, who have shown me how to do some "engineer only" repairs as well. That'll probably take more time than you want to spend and perhaps more risk as well, but I've been maintaining, repairing, and qualifying my own instruments for a few years and it's worked out quite well for both me and my current employer.

If you want a junked 1100, a have a couple of pieces to play with. A degasser and a UV detector, both of which came in a lot of goodies that I bought for the other stuff in the lot. For all I know both are junk...or perfect.

I remember that during my days at Pfizer we had Delta who did all maintenance, but I cannot find these people any more. I send few requests to companies outside of IL. Lets see if anybody wants to work

If I was fluent in Agilent and perhaps 500 miles closer, I'd be on this like white on rice. I've been reading through an old reference manual for the 1100 pump lately and it seems like a really good machine and not too tough to service. If the rest of their offerings are as well thought out, I can understand the following that they have.

I think I am the guy you are looking for. I'm in California but I can take a road trip. I'll contact you via your website. I'm thinking TLC for your six babies and then some training if you and your staff are interested. Training mostly as in, I'll show some people what I am doing and why. If someone in the lab can pull up an offline data file and print a report (choose 'detailed report') it will print out the firmware and revisions for all of the modules on your stack. It will make it easier to talk about what you might want done and what might need to be done.

Delta got "vacuumed" up by a larger company. The guy you most likely talked to is on Linked In.

I consider 1100s easy to work on, but there's a knack for knowing which parts to tinker with and which ones to just chuck at the first sign of trouble.
