Silanizing of glassware

Dear all,

in a very old publication, I read:

All the glassware used for this work was silanized with dichlorodimethyl silane.

Did anybody already perform such silanization? How shall I concretely do this?

Thank you very much for every hint.

Florian

Hi,

In our lab, to avoid silanization, we use borosilicate glass. In our case, it's to avoid adsorption of cannabinoids to the glass container during extraction.

A procedure of silanization :
Prepare a solution of diméthyldichlorosilane (Sigma D-3879) at 5% in toluene
Introduce this solution in the glass container and shake 10 min
Rince with toluene
Rince with methanol
Rince with toluene
Rince with methanol
Dry 20 min at 80°C

Dear geget,

thank you very much for your solution; I will try this procedure.

I use phenyl boronic acid for 3-mpcd (I am starting to anyways I switched from the AOAC bases HFBI method). It is specific for 1,2 and 1,3 diols and water makes no difference. I dissove 5g in 19ml acetone with 1ml H2O

I have done it many times. 2% dichlorodimethylsilane in hexane rinse over the glassware surface to be protected, then allow to dry. For very sticky compounds, repeat the process.
I was able to keep diquat from sticking to glass. It also works for reactive pesticides on glass wool inserts, although not as well as commercially prepared products.
