Agilent 1100 and Masslynx 4.1

Hi,

I am trying to set up control of our Agilent 1100 HPLC system with by Masslynx 4.1. I understand that this is supported but requires a GPIB card (rather than ethernet/JetDirect combo we use to control using Hystart, the Bruker software). Waters seem to insist that this must be an Agilent 53520B (not A, B). Does anyone have any experience in whether it is really necessary that it be THIS card, rather than a generic HPIB (like the NI 183617L I just managed to scrounge)?

Cheers,

Andy

ps. Apologies if this ahs already been discussed - I have searched around for a while.

Hi Andy

I don't know if rev. A or B makes a real difference. It is difficult anyway  I have just setup ML4.1 with an Agilent 1100 and I suffered with the rev. B GPIB card. If you still need help, drop me your e-mail address via PM and I can send you some support documents from waters on how to rename the GPIB to HPIB to make connection possible at all. Also I had to try different versions of Agilent IO suite (I was successful only with version 15.1.12008.0).

Good luck
Jörg

Hi, we have the same issue with an HP1100 after that our 996 detector broke down. Please could you email the documents you have to Csaba.Urbaniczky(at)sp.se . Thank you in advance /Csaba

Wow - didn't realise that I had responses here. Sorry if you thought me rude.

We've given up one this - Waters were really unhelpful. A maintenance company we deal with (staffed and run by a lot of ex-OEM people) seem to think that this is done a lot. Where we do need to connect the two, I've just been running the HPLC separately, and triggering the MS acquisition for each run (made a little arduino thing to convert the remote signals, so we didn't need an expensive contact closure board).

I'll be interested to ehar if anyone here gets it workign well, though....

Cheers,

Andy

Maybe it is a good idea to check the current supported instruments of the newest MassLynx. Recently we have got an Agilent 1200 SL running with MassLynx. Connection was established with the build-in ethernet card from the Agilent DAD. No HPIB is required for this instrument now.

The biggest problem was a corrupt MassLyns instrument method. After creating a new method file from scratch everything was running fine.

Klaus

Klaus, what do you mean with "from scratch"? Did you just write the same method (meaning, the same gradient time table etc) but using an empty file, or did you have to change something in your method to make it work?

I'm asking because since some weeks my 1100 autosampler destroys needles and I suspect some kind of software issue. I don't know where in the program such an error could reside.

Problem was solved by creating a new method-file by using an empty file. Before the system was injecting sometimes the same sample twicefold.

Unfortunately I'm not an experienced MassLynx user, but I heard from my collegeaus that the need to re-install there MassLynx installation every 2-3 years. In your case, maybe the firmware on the agilent systems is corrupt or there is a conflict with the firmware versions?

We've managed to get Masslynx to recognize the pump and turn the pump on. However, we still keep getting timeout errors. Also, an error about the column heater not being on. So, basically, we can turn the pump on, let the pump go for a little while, but end up getting a timeout communication error and cannot control the pump at all. Very frustrating.

Check what firmware version is running on the HPLC components. MassLynx only supports firmware A.05.01.

Hey guys.

I'm trying connect a Agilent G1311A to my Inlet Method Masslynx... And no way it functions...

I've seen a post

How can I have the information?
To rename GPIB to HPIB?

Thank you!!!

Use a 82350 HPIB card for Agilent systems, use the NI GPIB for others. Run the config and make sure each module is identified. If DAD in the stack, run HPIB cable there first, then the stack. Check the addresses of each, usually use default. Check firmware is correct for Masslynx version you are using.
