Manual fraction collectors for HPLC (or DIY equivalents!)

Hi all,

Bit of a strange request, this one - would anyone know of a programmable fraction collector that doesn't necessarily have to be synced with chromatography software? I am asking on behalf of a colleague of mine, whose current method involves simply collecting the analyte from the HPLC waste line for ~30 seconds, and waiting 10 minutes to do so again. As you can imagine, this gets quite tedious.

They've tried controlling an old FPLC fraction collector without the FPLC connected, but had no such luck. Any ideas?

If you're in the US, you can pick up old Pharmacia fraction collectors dirt-cheap from fleabay; e.g.:

I recommend that you also take a look at the "Foxy 200" or any of it's re-branded equivalents (Rainin FC-1 comes to mind). You can find them used anywhere. They're pretty rugged machines and can be operated from the keypad manually, programmed to collect based on time or drop count, and if your detector has an analog voltage output as most do, you can run that into the fraction collector and have it collect all peaks or certain peaks without the need for any external PC controlling it. Most also come with a valve to divert to waste as well. I've bought several used ones and have yet to come across a lemon.

yes, the Isco Foxy200 or the newer foxy R2 can do this, as they can be fully controlled by keypad.
