Empower Shutdown Methods

Okay. I will be honest...I am not too keen on what the "time period" column does for the shutdown method. If I enter 60 does that mean without injection etc etc the unit will automatically shut down after that amount of time? The reason I ask is because I am having INSTRUMENT FAILURE issues with a Waters Alliance with 2695 Sep Module and Empower 2. It is an older computer and is being updated, but the constant instrument failures (without bad injections, mind you) are putting me a bit behind. Should I use the control panel autoshutdown or add it in the instrument method?

Thanks so much.

FWIW, I've never bothered with discrete shutdown methods. I simply program appropriate instrument shutdown conditions into whatever instrument method I'm working on. Typically these involve a column flush, pump stop post flush, bringing the column to ambient temperature, shutting off the detector lamp(s), and sometimes dropping the temperature of the sample compartment to 5-10 deg C.

I thought with the 2695 you just added your shutdown conditions to the end of the pump table etc. For example, at 60min flow goes to 0.1ml/min, if you have a run time of 20min. The only time it reaches the 60min event is after the last sample is run. Maybe things are different now!

^ that is indeed a common way to get this done.

As I use lots of different methods, I generally prefer to have a discreet shutdown method set that I tack onto the end of an analytical run (using Condition Column function). This way, I don't need to program all of those extra lines into the rest of my instrument methods and I can copy it from project to project.
