Can anyone recommend general purpose capillary GC column(s) for alcohols and glycols? Also, if you would direct me to application notes for these compounds, it would be most appreciated. I will be using autoinjector or headspace and have a split / splitless 6890 GC with FID and 6890 with MSD.
Thank you.

Do a search on the forum. You will find that 1301/624 capillaries and PEG capillaries are the two most popular phases for alcohol and glycol work.

Yes, that is a PEG column.
Thanks.

We started doing this work about a year ago, and there is very little information for these compounds. Most of the supplier chromatograms are in a solvent or percentage levels, not trace levels in water as we are testing. Best information I found was related to clinical work, using derivitization headspace or direct inject. We are getting more requests for glycols and glycol ethers lately, so we are still researching these!

These compounds can be done by HPLC with RI detector at very low levels (< 1ppm) if large sample injection techniques are used, usually when dissolved in water or tested from water using 100% water as the mobile phase.
di ol and tri ol compounds are often done by derivatives, possibly using HS analysis.
These glycols can be a challenge. I hope you enjoy your experiences as I did mine.
best wishes,
Rod

I use the Phenomenex ZB-WaxPlus for all of my alcohol/glycol work. I have used the Rtx-Wax before and got equal results, the Phenomenex was just a bit cheaper when I bought it.
