Regarding the GC program to detect the compound Thiophene.

Hi everyone,
This is a research scholar from Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, India. I would like detect the compound [Thiophene] using Thermo Ultra Trace-Gas Chromotography which has specifications like Detecor-FID, column-capillary Rtx-1. Kindly let me know the GC program to detect the thiophene using my Thermo-GC.

Please try Google and you should find examples of GC analysis conditions for thiophene.

Hi,
No one has given the GC program for FID-detector but the program is availabel for FPD detector and PB-5 column when we search in google. Kindly let me know about this problem..

An example of the GC conditions on an Rtx-1 column. The GC oven conditions are independent of the detector conditions.

Agilent has an application note on this but it uses multidimensional GC. They use their microfluidics switch but it can be done just as easily with a regular valve.

Hi,
I am using FID detector for analyzing thiophene but its sensitivity is low. i can only detect thiophene up to 1000 PPM concentration with +-100 PPM accuracy which is present in a binary mixture with n heptane.

Several app notes are available for thiophene in the Agilent catalog. Mostly, they use a nonpolar phase (DB-1 or DB-5) or a PLOT column (GC-GasPro). Here's one where they use a thick-film DB-1:

You shouldn't worry too much about the GC program. I run TIC of flavors for duplication all the time using a general 50min program of 40 to 300 and see thiol compounds on both my db-5 and innowax column which are my two workhorse columns. Thiols behave pretty well on all columns.

The problem with thiophene, as with many other compounds is that it becomes difficult when there are compounds that are likely to coelute. For example, detection of thiophene can become tricky when a significant quantity of benzene is present, as in petroleum fractions, and you are using an FID detector (and as I recall using a DB-1 type of column -- like Rtx-1 -- does not resolve this particular pair well). So the other question is what is the matrix?
