correlation gas chromatography versus retention indices

Hi All,

I am wondering how does correlation gas chromatography (CRG) method differs from the retention indices method? In latter, we use n-alkanes (mostly) which might be used to estimate, for example, vapor pressure of other analytes. Whereas, in CRG, standards with known vapor pressures are injected to estimate the vapor pressure of unknowns.

Can someone emphasize the fundamental difference between the two approach? And which one is preferable?

Thanks in advance!
