Hi:

My company is looking to buy GCMS Model 7890A/5975C or 7890A/220 Ion Trap. If anyone has used this Agilent 7890/220 Ion trap model and please share your experience. Agilent claims it is almost equivalent to GC/MS/MS. Is it worth it?

My company will be analyzing cosmetic products such as lipstick, mascara, shampoo, conditioner, detergents, fragrances etc. Focusing on quantitation of Diethylene glycol, 1,4 dioxane, allergens, pescticides in health supplements etc. I found this forum is very helpful for a starter. Thanks

Is Perkin Elmer is better? Or Shimadzu?

I would worry about using an ion trap for quantitation, a SQ or TQ would likely be better.

As for which manufacturer is better, this is a very subjective thing.

Best bet to give a sample to each one for a demo and see what they come back with. You'll get a feel for which company you like best as well.

I'm obviously biased towards Bruker (see signature), so don't overlook them in favour of the 'big boys'.

Do you have experince of Bruker GCMS. If yes, please share with us in detail as compared to Agilent.

He works for them If he is ex Varian then he may know the 220 well too.

His advice agrees with mine. Contact all the reps, get samples run and ask for local references. There is no substitute for good local support.

Having owned and operated 3 Varian 2000 series ion traps, I recommend a SQ for your application. The Ion Trap can do MS/MS which in certain applications is highly advantageous but doubt you need it. Developing methods on an ion trap is much more difficult as the method needs to be designed around the matrix. We used our ion traps to test about 60,000 oil samples for PCBs and the method worked very well but have since moved to TQ instruments.

I have a Bruker Scion and find it excellent.

Regarding your analytes and matrixes, you should have gc-ms-ms not just a single mass.
