Hey guys,

I am new to the forum, so forgive me for making mistakes.

I wanted to ask if you know how to obtain access to some free trials of software to control my HP 5890 GC system?

Your help would be very much appreciated.

If you are looking for a demonstration with a view to buy, all the suppliers should be delighted to carry one out.
Where in the world are you ? Have you contacted any vendors ?

What I meant by free trials is something like a demo version of the fully functional application.

Most data systems have a demo mode and you can have a look at them in this mode but it does not work as well as actually trying them. We sell the Clarity data system and you are only an hour from me.

UniChrom controls 5890.
Demo-mode allows measurement time of 3 min.

5890 has been out of support for a while now, so question is: does the GC already have HPIB communication inside it? Does your computer have HPIB/GBIB board or communication to the GC? If so, don't you have a ChemStation license number already? A.06 software was provided free as part of Y2000 fears. And updates to ChemStation software since then don't do much to actually help the user to do his job easier or better (we still use A.06.03 on a few systems).

So apparently you don't even have such older version of ChemStation?

HI, OpenLAB CDS EZChrom from Agilent controls the 5890 still and is supported officially by Agilent. The software comes with 60 days no-license fully functional.
The million pound question: is your 5890 equipped with the boards RS232 e.g. to communicate with the software??

Before diving into options, I would ask a couple of questions. First, do you really need to control the GC? That is, are you going to be switching between multiple methods of analysis where you will be changing GC parameters such as temperature programs and pressures? Second, do you want to work at vastly different concentrations for your components of interest? Third, are you figuring on running this system on an autosampler? If all three are yes, then look at all the vendors here who would be willing to sell you software. If yes to all three, then you need to also answer the question about the HP-IB/RS-232 card on the back of the GC since that can change your options.

If the answer to 1, 2, and 3 are no, then the question is one of simply collecting the data rather than controlling things. If that is the case, you have a more options. If 1 and 2 are no but you still don't have an autosampler, you still have options (meaning not just buying a 7673.) If 1 and 3 are no but 2 is a yes you have an interesting problem in that just getting the data out from a 5890 limits you to 0-1V output and ranging.

Not a simple answer, sorry, but in reality not such a simple question. Perfectly willing to expound if you want to abuse yourself some more....

DONT TRY CHROMELEON. IT IS THE WORST SOFTWARE I HAVE EVER SEEN IN 19 YRS OF EXPERIENCE. VERY FRUSTRATING. YOU WILL CURSE DEVELOPER EVERY MOMENT WHILE WORKING WITH CHROMELEON.

"Clarity" can control 5890 and is cheap. Buyers get free software updates.

Chromeleon is one of the best and offers a lot. But for people, that do not wish to get too involved with the analysis I guess there are simpler packages.

"Chromulan" is the only free software I know of, that is capable not only to edit but also to acquire data.
