How buffer work and used in Reverse phase chromatography ?

Hi Friends,

I want to know what is the roll of phosphate buffer or any salts like sodium aceate or citric acid etc. in reverse phase chromatography? Buffers helps in separation ? How to chose buffer for reverse phase chromatography ?
