The most common ion source for GC-MS is electron impact. Sample is introduced in the gas phase coming off the capillary column.
The most common ion source for LC-MS is electrospray. Sample is introduced as a liquid coming off the LC column.

What exactly are you proposing?

Yes it is.. I have such a setup... But for GC you have to an APCI ( OR water's version called APGC) source, NOT EI.

Varian had the 1200L MS, which with a source change could be either an APCI or ESI-LCMS or an EI or CI-GCMS. My lab uses ours as an LC-ESI-MS/MS, but if we had the hardware to interface a GC, we could also run GC-MS or GC-MS/MS on the same box. It's not the most sensitive instrument out there, but it's definitely good for routine work (ppm to mid ppb-level detection of compounds in a soil or water extract, for example. which depending on the sample concentration factor could result in ppb to ppt level reporting limits), and most definitely an academic environment if all the equipment is present to switch between LC and GC-MS.
