I need to quantitate a small somewhat polar small aromatic compound with that was given to me in toluene by GC/FID. It may be a one time thing and needs to be done ASAP.

I have a FFAP column on my system which should work for it...

I have always used the same sample solvent for standards as for unkowns for GC... but I don't have any toluene to make standards... the analyte is volatile enough that drying off the toluene is not an option...

Would using say acetonitrile for standards cause quantitation issues?

With HPLC, not so much. With GC, different behaviors in the split inlet may matter, guess it all depends on the accuracy required.

So how about diluting your sample with ACN, and make you standard up in ACN to lessen the difference???

There should be little difference in your results as long as there are no interferences in either solvent for your analyte.

You could always dilute both in methanol if AcN could be an issue. Perhaps pentane would work for your analyte? Acetone is another solvent that could be tried.

I am presuming that your analyte elutes after toluene sufficiently that any solvent eluting before toluene will be no problem.

methanol elutes around benzene. toluene elutes around ethanol.

Back in the day we did not have to worry about splitter discrimination. Can you do on column injection?

Not setup for it...

If this analysis is going to become routine I'll use toluene for the standards, but for now I'll try ACN...
