separating small molecules from fats/oils w/out SEC

Discussions about sample preparation: extraction, cleanup, derivatization, etc.

Good morning,

I am trying to figure out a reproducible method of separating small molecules, (ie pharmaceuticals and human hormones) from lipids and proteins in biosolids and animal tissues (fish fillets and organs). It seems like size exclusion chromatography is a possible route, but those systems are expensive. Anybody have experience with sample cleanup, particularly extracts of animal tissues, to remove substances which interfere chromatographically and/or with electrospray ionization?

Thanks for your comments!
take a look at the procedures done for getting toxins out of food samples
one that comes to mind is histamine
Or you could look at something like the Regis "ISRP" column:
http://www.chromtech.com/Catalog7/PDF_Indvpge/107.pdf
and possibly minimize the cleanup altogether.
