Waters uplc H-class vs Agilent UHPLC 1290 intinity

Hi everybody
I will buy an UHPLC coupled to a diode array detector.
I hesitate between Waters UPLC H-class (detector Acquity UPLC PDA with high sensitivity cell, Empower 3) and Agilent 1290 infinity (detector 1290 infinity with high sensitivity Max-light cell).
What do you recommend?
What do you think about the sensitivity of both detectors?
In your opinion, which one would be the best machine?

i used Waters UPLC (pda an uv det.) it was working good and useful,
and aproximately my company buy H-Class,H-class have a claim that " hclas make the both work of hplc and uplc" but we coluldnt, some hclass tubing changed because of our some hplc analyses didnt work,
if you buy hclass you will not be sorry but you shouldnt think that you can use same system as a hplc and uplc,
choose one of them and use as a hplc or a uplc, (i didnt use and see agilent UHPLC)
if you want to hear about detector, it is perfect i think, why?
i used shimadzu,agilent,perkin,surveyor (hplc) and waters(hplc+uplc+hclas), and if i were you i would buy waters and i think empower is the best software,

We have both in our lab. Be careful, and evaluate your requirements as many aspect as you can (further cost, service accessible, parts and PM price...) .
The 1290 is a binary, the H-class is a quaternary system. Binary can mix only two eluent (handle 4), quaternary can mix four, but the binary has better dead volume. For 1290 we have a narrow capillary kit, H-class is a factory default.
Compare to the results (for same methods), the 1290 seems slightly better peak shapes, and better baseline noise.
Both controlled by Empower 2 since the 1290 driver released.
1290 runs without any problem for a year, H-class had a comm.board replaced in warranty and had an inj prec. problem (obstruction repaired by service) in one and a half year.

I have used the high sensitivity max light flow cell and it provides major sensitivity improvements with minor losses in efficiency.

I'm currently working on 1290 binary system ... Recently Agilent announced their quaternary 1290 Infinity pump which is with low pressure mixing (1 pump head) and microfluidic components to minimize dead volume. Our 1290 Infinity works just fine mainly in HPLC mode and I manage to obtain minute UHPLC separations of some formulations with 1.8um column. Agilent offer their addon ISET to emulate UHPLC system in HPLC mode - this is very useful for pharma labs with their many older HPLC methods. ISET is installed on every 1290 pump and you have trial license for first 6-months. Agilent's OpenLAB software offers even unnecessary posibilities - it is complex software designed to comply all regulations in contemporary labs and thats why it is not so user-friendly as previous ChemStation.

I like more the modular design of Agilent because of possibility to further upgrade or re-configure your system. Our 1290 DAD works perfect in HPLC mode with MaxLight cartridge flowcell - at 10-20 Hz scan speed.

Yes Alexander the new software OpenLAB has defInitely more capabilities but we had to leave the 10 years old design behind us. Some functionalities that might seem unnecessary for one user might be essential for another. And OpenLAB is just the beginning. Expect to see more soon :)

Yes, I understand Agilent's intention to create universal CDS platform and to leave ChemStation design in history. Actually OpenLAB has almost everything for everyone working with HPLC and exactly this could bring some discomfort for users. For example I found "Spectrum view" of Chemstation to be better designed than "PDA-view" in OpenLAB ;)

Hi,

There is also a 3rd option that you may wany to consider, the Dionex Ultimate 3000 from Thermo Scientific.

Like the 1260, this is a modular design system and so offers the greatest flexibility for upgrading or changing distinict modules such as detectors, pumps etc.

The Ultimate also has a large pressure/flow footprint, allowing for true transisiton from HPLC to UHPLC in one system (up to 1034Bar at 5ml/min and 800Bar at 8ml/min).

Detector wise the DAD offers superb sensitivity, with up to 8 independent channels running at up to 100Hz. When coupled with the gold standard software of Chromeleon 7.1, this is increased to 200Hz.

1290- low quality of assembly, cheaper materials, constant service problems, incompetent service rep.I have not seen another system to fail so much in one year. Long ago Agilent is not what was Hewlett Packard. UltiMate 3000RS is a really good machine, much better than 1290.
