use of 2-mercaptoethanol in HPLC

Hi All,
I have just joined the chrom forum as I have been given the job of setting
up and HPLC system at our factory. I am starting on a method to measure
methyl-mercury in waters.
I have noticed that a lot of methods use 2-mercaptoethanol in the mobile phase
My question is Why? It seems from a few papers I read it sharpens the peaks
but what is the mechanism?
Thanks
