UPLC - Shutdown program - Flow & oven temp

Hello everybody.

When I create a new Shutdown Program for my Dionex Ultimate 3000 RS, Chromeleon specifies me:
"The final flow will possibly be set when the oven temperature is still larger than 50°C. A combination of high temperature and low flow rate can damage columns. "

So, here's my question: I don't understand why my column can be damaged by a low flow rate and a high temperature.

Thanks for the explanation.

Best regards
Jérémy

Since I have never written a shutdown method I was also interested and have discussed your observation with my Thermo/Dionex representative:

High temperatures and low flow rates can evaporate the mobile phase completely, especially when one uses NP conditions (Hexane, CH2Cl2 etc.). It should prevent the column from being dried out, which may damage the column.

The warning message only occurs, when the checkbox “Wait until the temperature is below following threshold before setting the final flow:” is not activated.
Additionally it should be mentioned that without activated “Use Temperature Control” the cool down may take a long time since no active heating or cooling down will be performed.
