The instrument failed rather abruptly, and I am trying to troubleshoot it - with no success so far.
The symptoms are as follows:
* the MSD signal level (counts) is extremely low
* the instrument does not autotune
* in positive mode the tune peak heights vary dramatically with time, and there are *many* peaks - not only the ones we should see
* in negative mode the observed calibrant spectrum is stable, however, I can only see the higher-mass peaks (above 1500)
* there is current in the chamber, so the ions are transmitted. There is also spray from the nebulizer - it can be seen if you shine a light or laser pointer into the chamber
* all ChemStation diagnostics pass, except the Ion Optics test. That one fails dies to low abundance of one (or more) of the calibrant peaks
* all Agilent LabAdvisor diagnostics pass, including the ion optics part
* the voltages of the internal power supplies are all OK
* the spray chamber is clean, and the capillary is pristine
* vacuum is perfect (2.28 rough, 3.1x10-6 high)
Do the symptoms look recognizable? Any thoughts?
We are trying to bring in an Agilent engineer. Unfortunately, due to the specifics of our location, this might not happen soon enough. The local vendor that sold us the instrument has no idea what is wrong.
Any help will be very much appreciated!
