sample is doesn't fully dissolve and is a gel

Hi,
I'm working with chitin. I want to get it fully dissolved in solution.
I made a 2 mg/mL mixture with 5% LiCl in DMA as the diluent. The material appears to be mostly transparent. I was hoping to remove large particles/aggregates/gels by filtering through 0.45 um membrane. This just clogged the membrane.
I was wondering if there is a way to remove these large particles/aggregates/gels and leave only the most soluble and best behaving species from chitin in solution.
I think the gelling and aggregation is due to greater molecular weight, but I am not sure of this.
Any help would be appreciated.
