Hello everyone,
have you ever tried to determine mineral oil index in waste water using GC-MS system instead of GC-FID? Is it better to use TIC or SIM method for quantification?
Greetings

GCFID is better to use for quantification because with GCMS fragmentation you introduce error. I would try to make a standard curve with some standard solutions or something and see how big the error is. TIC and SIM are not mutually exclusive, SCAN mode v. SIM mode are. I would look at the total ion chromatogram in SCAN mode to try the standard curves.

I would rather affraid that real samples can introduce bigger error because they can consist of compounds which are not visible for FID. But my problem is that I have no FID so I wll try your suggestion
