HP 5890 data acquisition via LabVIEW

My lab has two GC (HP 5980 Series II) and we would like to replace the old integrator with computer program for data acquisition.

Our university provides LabVIEW which we would like to try on first. I was told by Agilent technique support that LabVIEW might be able to communicate with GC 5890 through a RS-232 board plus a RS-232 cable. So I called the sales department of this board, however, their technician told me that they have never tried this board with LabVIEW, and special configuration might be necessary.

I am a little bit confused right now. Nobody in our lab has experience with LabVIEW, and there seems to be no information online that well matches my case. Could anybody here give me some suggestion on this problem or where to find such information? Any input would be very much appreciated!

I have 4 years experience with integrating LabVIEW and external instruments. Everything basically has to be done on a case-by-case basis. You should contact LabVIEW and ask for suggestions. Their helpline is very helpful and can usually point you in the right direction.

The best place to start is to hook everything up and start pressin buttons! You will need to open the Measurement and Automation utility to get your computer and the instrument talking. Then look for something you can drop on the block diagram that will let you begin to acquire information from the instrument.

Hope this helps,
