In a dynamic mixer, there is a moving part - typically a little magnetic stirbar w/ paddles at either end trapped in a piece of tubing surrounded by an electromagnet.
Static mixers involve no moving parts. They are simply a device designed to add lots of little twists and turns to the flow path of the mobile phase, thus passively mixing it as it works through.
Dynamic mixers typically cost more, do a better job and add just a little to the total volume between your inlet frits and autosampler. Static mixers are generally cheaper and may add considerable volume while being variably effective.
