Heres a slide from my lecture notes:

This makes no sense to me at all. R is a fraction. Lets say the concentration of analyte in the mobile phase is 2.5M and the void volume is 3L. 2.5 * 3 = 7.5. What am I missing here?

You need to talk (diplomatically!) to your instructor. The definitions as written are inconsistent. The "R" in the middle two equations would be the *amount* of analyte in the mobile phase, not the fraction.
