Usually this is within the context of sample cleanup for organics analysis, whether it be SPE or via manually packed columns as in older methods. Alumina (Al2O3) and Silica (SiO2) have different properties and polarities due to the metal elements they contain. Some analytes may be difficult to remove from certain adsorbents or might even be degraded during the process. The following EPA method is a good example of how certain adsorbents are used. Table 1 shows which classes of analytes are best for which method.:
