Hi

Although my favourite column while developing HPLC methods is Phenomenex Luna C18, it is extremely expensive (around 1000 $) in Turkey, which is roughly twice the other C18 columns. This is possibly results from the distributor in our country. I searched internet for general price of phenomenex columns but i couldn't get any data. I wonder the approximate price of Phenomenex Luna C18 250*4.6 mm 5um in other countries. Could you please help on this topic?

My work use Luna C18 100 x 2.1 mm, 3.0 um with price approx. 650 USD and Security guard C18 4 x 2.1 mm, 3 um with price approx. 320 USD.

250*4.6mm 5u Luna in the UK has a catalogue price of just over £400 I think. I seem to remember guard columns are about half that price for a pack of 10. In the UK, Phenomenex are not particularly expensive compared to other manufacturers.

Do you have to use such large columns?

I wanted to learn the price of Luna 250*4.6 5um column as a sample. All phenomenex columns are expensive here. eg: Kinetex 50*2.1mm column is more than 1250 USD where as Acquity is around 750 $. I prefer phenomenex columns because they are robust and long lifetime for many applications, nevertheless i feel fat headed while paying that much money.

Catalogue price (Germany) for a Luna C18(2), 250x4.6mm, 5µm is 525€ which should be about 700$. Kinetex C18, 50x2.1, 2.6µm is 540€ (~720$), for 1.7µm 660€ (~880$).

When you ask chromatography colleagues here (not those from the purchasing department ) Luna columns are supposed to be robust, long-living work-horses and not particularly expensive. Waters, on the contrary, is supposed to be quite expensive. I don't know the actual price for waters columns, though .

700$ is the high price for a standard C-18 5u 4.6X250 column
you can find others easily as well at 600$, GL science, ACE, SEPAX, YMC, and they will be as good.

If you like Luna and are worried about selectivity of column from other vendor, you may try to find something similar using selectivity chart like this one from Waters.

I agree with HPLCaddict's comments, Waters columns are generally more expensive (BEH C18 50*2.1mm around 1k USD here).

I called my sale rep., he gave me about 600 USD per column for Luna 250 x 4.6 mm, 5um (price is down when purchase a lot., >10 columns)

I would guess that's a problem of small market for HPLC columns. Company needs to have higher profit margin for each item they sell because they don't sell many.

If they are not "official" or "licensed" sales representatives you may try contacting supplier in different country, however take into account things like taxes, customs, and cost of shipment.

In the past, when using a Luna C8, we searched for a column with similar characteristics from another manufacturer. We settled on the Zorbax Eclipse XDB C8 (Agilent) of the same dimensions and particle size. I don't know anything about your application, or if the Luna and Eclipse C18 columns would be as similar, but just a suggestion.

The price I get quoted for the Luna C18 250 x 4.6 5 um is $690 USD. I have found, in general, Phenomenex columns to be expensive compared to other columns I use. That being said, I am still testing it, but it looks like I'm going to switch to the Phenomenex Kinetex C8 for most of my work-I have been impressed by what I have seen with it so far in my lab, impressed enough to spend the extra money.
