Hitachi Chromaster and Empower CDS disconnect

Discussions about HPLC, CE, TLC, SFC, and other "liquid phase" separation techniques.

Hello everyone,

we are currently having issues (inconveniences) regarding the Hitachi Chromaster systems set-up in Empower 3.8.1 CDS.
Our Hitachi Chromaster HPLC consists of a pump, autosampler, column oven, FL-D, DAD, as well as an external CAD (connected via eSATIN).

The issue is that we can’t figure out how to set up three separate systems (1. DAD only; 2. FL only; 3. CAD only). The HPLC is connected to the LAC/E via USB cable, and even though I can turn one detector off when configuring the modules in the Hitachi Maintenance software, it doesn’t actually help to solve the problem.
Currently, we managed to set up two systems:
1. FL+DAD
2. FL+DAD+CAD (because the FL+DAD was already set up and could not be changed).
A small note: this is a GMP R&D lab, which routinely runs analyses; hence, the instrument cannot be reconfigured on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.
Do you have any experience with Hitachi and Empower, or ideas?

Thank you a lot and best regards
Marina
Hi, Marina

not sure what CAD you are connecting to, but from my experience for empower 3, the CAD (Dionex or thermo ) should be able to connect with USB and signal can be collected via USB cable with a RS-232 as start and stop function easily with 2695 HPLC (maybe different from you Hitachi HPLC).

you can create new system as you need with different name as below

1 HPLC + FLD
2. HPLC +DAD
3. HPLC + CAD

Based on what you need, set offline for others and select the one you need to online in order to use what you want.

Thank you for the reply!

We use CAD from Thermo and we always needed an analog transmitter (simmilar to eSATIN), even when we used Open Lab as CDS, so I am guessing that is the only option for this CAD model.

Regarding the saparation of FL from DAD:
Theproblem is that Hitachi Maintainance Software finds the Instrument at the second conncetion position (0200) and none other. Which meains when I try to configure FL only, it creates an Instrument and sets it up in Empower just fine (with DAD off). But when I reconfigure it in Maintainance software (0200 position stays)) later with DAD only (FL is physically turned off) and set it up in empower as DAD System, the instrument error pops up and the detectors won't appear (probably because the system searched for the 'old' configuration, where the FL was configured). I attach a screenshot of the existing systems, that do not really work. Maybe you have any other idea of how to decouple them or anything...

Thank you for the support!

Have you tried an "all in" config in Empower and just shut unused modules off in the specific instrument methods?
Thanks,

Is the issue that you have compounds with a chromophore and no fluorophore to analyze, then you'll have compounds with a fluorophore to analyze, then you'll have compounds with no chromophore to analyze, thus necessitating the DAD only, FLD only, and CAD only?

You could keep it as you have it; DAD-FLD, or DAD-FLD-CAD, and just write your methods to not collect DAD and FLD data when running the CAD.

I would make it very clear to the users to break the line into the CAD if they wont be using the CAD. They can get temperamental.
Yeah, I guess I will stick to the 'all in' configuration and will be using Instrument Methods to control the data collection...

Thanks a lot for the support, everyone :)

Beste Wishes
Marina
