SPME Questions

Discussions about sample preparation: extraction, cleanup, derivatization, etc.

I am considering using SPME as a way of trapping compounds coming off my samples as they are heated and I have a couple of questions...

1. Could I leave my SPME fibre in the headspace above the sample or immersed in a chopped up solid sample for a number of weeks at 80C or will this cause the degradation of the fibre?
2. I might want to be able to subject my resulting fibre to a number of techniques. Can the fibres be extracted in a range of solvents?

Many thanks.
1 in the gas phase but need to mix, at least occasionally
2 yes, treat this as a sort of SPE cartridge

Thanks for the reply. If I do extract the fibre in solvent, can the fibre be reused? Would I need to heat it at a high temperature under vacuum to recondition it?
some solvent might swell the fiber.
Ruth1770,

So, are you saying that your chopped up whatever won't reach equilibrium for the component you are interested in for several weeks?

Best regards,
