Stability-indicating method for coal tar

Was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how to apporach the development of a stability-indicating method for coal tar active (a complex and variable mixture) in shampoo?

Good question. Similarly, I've always wondered what people do for a stability-indicating test procedure for other actives like petrolatum or aluminum salts in antiperspirants.
