can I use a bog standard syringe filter to get rid of salts, or do I have to go down the fancy SPE road?

I'm not sure I understand the question  . More detail on how were you proposing to desalt using a filter would help.

golly, I think this is the first time i've heard "SPE" and "fancy" together in one sentence. :P

spe is cheap, effective- available in 96 well format. Unless sample loss is a concern... Are you talking about something akin to membrane dialysis, fit on a syringe?

This is usually done with cenrifuge ultrafilters, dialysis chambers, ion exchange, or size exclusion.

First of all i like your nick.... Second: What exactly do you want to desalt? If you want to desalt your mobile phase before entering into MS, then you chould follow this link.http://www.dionex.com/en-us/products/ac ... 73569.html. The so called suppressor is able to desalt and neutralize the mobile phase by converting the salt into the acid. Your friendly Dionex/ThermoFisher rep would be happy to help you in this case.

Do you really need to desalt before before RP LC/MS? Would not he salts come out at the void or very close to it in most cases... Could not you just divert the flow to waste until after the salts elute?

@Karen01 - That what I did. I had a guard column before the column;then after another switch valve that just sent the first part of the liquid to waste and then back online to the MS.
