The SGE sells ms-NoVent device that allows the MS to be operational almost immediately; results in minutes rather than in many hours or even days, depending on the sensitivity required from the instrument. It costs about US$1,000.
Is it widely used by GCMS analysts? What are the advantages and disadvantages for this device?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Jimmy: I cannot help you with the SGE ms-NoVent, but I thought I would mention the Restek EZ No-Vent ($175 US), another common product for your application. I have attached a link which should explain the pro's and con's of this product. They work well, but they do allow a small volume of air into the MS (through a small 0.1mmID transferline). In addition, because of the transferline, your carrier gas pressure program will need to be modified (increased) to compensate for this restriction.

I've had both in my lab and I like the Restek EZ No-Vent better, it's simpler as well. I did find the directions on "how much column end should protrude" a little unclear (but I'm not a rocket scientist), but it does work, and we don't get any air peaks due to leaking. We're using it now.
