Hi,
I have just bought a Waters UPLC column to try on my Thermo Accela system. However, I am having problems connecting this up without getting dead volume issues. Does anyone know what type of fitting Waters use? Is it Swagelok or do I need to buy a Waters specific type of ferrule. I have tried calling Waters but no joy.

Yes, you need Waters fittings.

You should order one of these:

Finger-Tight Reusable Fitting Kit [700003139]

You can use it on all of your columns in that system. You may need to replace the peice of tubing that goes from the injector to the column if it currently has a wrench tight fitting on it.

other departement changed to these fittings on their agilent systems and are satisfied with them

A reusable fitting is not required but recommended since you can re-make the connection to the column inlet if the chromatography doesn't look good. This also allows use of different vendor's columns with the same tubing.

I believe the ferrules Waters used to send with their systems were swagelock ( 2-piece ferrule)

Look at these SmartFitting concept as alternative. It has self locking/unlocking mechanism. Can be used in any application (HPLC and UPLC) and cost less than similar fittings:

Waters UPLC columns use Parker style fittings. The same ferrule can be used as for agilent and waters, but the ferrule depth is 0.09", i.e if you re-seat the fittings used for agilent columns it should work.
