Is there any method to determine dimethylamine by TLC???
What are the conditions and what visualization agent can i use?

dimethylamine is sufficiently volatile that it would not be a good candidate for direct TLC. Best approach would be to make a fluorescent derivative with something like NBD-chloride and run that.

Thanks for the comment.
Can i do anything else to get that???

I am getting an impurity related to metformin named n-methylmethamine, which is nothing but DMA, i cant say this as volatile. i have to get spot in TLC for this. i tried almost all method for this. can anyone suggest anything related to that???
Thanks in advance

vishnu, do you have a reference to N-methylmethamine, there seems to be some confusion here.
Definatly, dimethylamine is quite volatile, I can imagine that one would need an acidic, nonvolatile mobile phase to hold
(CH3)2NH2+ on the plate, maybe??

i am using water acetic acid and butanol combination. i dont have a reference standard.
is there any method to identify DMA by tlc???

*With* a reference standard, maybe, but not easy.
*Without* a reference standard, no.

I can use some DMA solution as ref std. can you explain the method please???

I'll repeat what I posted earlier:

There is also still that possible confusion about DMA and N-methylmethamine.

Hello Vishnu !
TLC in Benzene/CHCL3/Acetic acid mixture in cold and visualisation by Dragendorf reagent ?

Dear DSP007,
Thanks, but i cant get you. can you please explain???

Vishnu,
I believe this is what DSP007 is referring to:
http://www.erowid.org/archive/rhodium/p ... .ident.pdf
Or something similar. This is a research paper on TLC for amphetamine detection using Dragendorff Reagent. Also says how to prepare the reagent.
I think what Tom was getting at was making a fluorescence derivative and putting that on a TLC place and detecting it using a UV lamp or something of the sort. Please correct me if I'm off with that one Tom. This would probably work equally as well. In reality you will need to derivatize the amine to something that gives off light (necessary for visual ID for TLC).
Hope this helps get you on track.

That is correct.
