equipment needed for degas of mobile phase

hi,

hplc is all new to me and I am beginning to re-set up an existing hplc machine.

I need to know what equipment i need to filter hplc mobile phase. I have the flask, filter and clamp. on the flask is a nozzle to which should connect to a vacuum pump / water trap?

I have within my laminair flow the taps available for the water / vacuum / nitrogen gas.

Could any one please kindly explain or let me know what should I buy (tubing, connectors, water trap), what is a water trap? and how does it look like?, is there set I can buy in one go than having to buy parts?

many thanks

In order to avoid cofusing you (one the one hand), or "talking down" to you (on the other hand), it would help to know something about your experience and educational levels.

hi tom,
im just a starter, i have basic knowledge of hplc by reading around books and reading the manual specific to the hplc machine that i will be using. i am a postgraduate student.

You will probably not find details about vacuum filtration in an HPLC book because it is a general chemical laboratory technique (sort of like using a balance). It is much better demonstrated than described.

What you need to do is to find a postdoc or technician to show you how it's done.

Schott funnel or similar parsed divays a Teflon filter flask Buchner, any pump, rubber hose, bottle Tishchenko, valve leaks air, or a simple needle from the syringe inserted into the hose.

I'll echo what Tom said - this is a very straightforward procedure that is very easy to learn by being shown how. Sorry to say, if you have nobody who is technically competent to help you get started, then filtering mobile phase will be only the first of a long list of problems that you are going to struggle with.

Is there anyone else in the laboratory who is using HPLC ?

I guess, DSP can record a video toturial for you
Is it right, Dmitry?
You also can use other autors

There is another toturial

Here they use vacuum filtration for govering cristalls from solution.
In a case of HPLC's mobile phase this method suitable too.
Filter will filtrate mechanical particals from mobile phase when vacuum will degase it.
