MSD 5973 locked (error 204)

my MSD is saying it is locked by the console (error code 204). when I try to load chemstation it cannot establish communication with the MS due to this lock. how do I fix it/ unlock it?

Normally power cycling the MS and re-booting the PC will release the lock.

so turn the MS off then on? is it safe to do this?

power cycle the MSD by turning it off for a period of about 10 seconds. Obviously its not something you want to repeat on a normal basis but when needed it will be fine.
