General question about chromatography

Hi,

somewhat silly of me to be asking these kind of things but still... I am having some trouble with the basic terminology concerning chromatography and as I looked for answers I came across different expressions for the same thing.
What are TLC, GC, HPLC,... ? chromatography techniques, types of chromatography,... ?
What are SEC, HIC, IEC, RPC, affinity chr.,... ? types of chromatography, modes of chromatography, chromatography methods... ?
What are, for instance in ion exchange chromatography, pH elution, salt elution, chromatofocusing?

I know what the individual chromatography ***** does and when and why it is applied, so I am not looking for an explanation how, for example RPC, works. I am just interested in the basic terminology. I hope you can understand my quandary.
I would really appreciate it if someone could help me clarify these basic concepts.

Hi

I am not certain that all would agree on the name convention but I belive that a table present in for instant "Fundamentals of analytical chemistry" by "Skoog, West, Holler" in the introduction to chromatographic methods chapter sums it up pretty well.

The table is called "Classification of Column Chromatografic Methods", the table consists of four columns:

General classification: example: Liquid chromatography (LC) (mobile phase:liquid), Gas chromatography (GC) (mobile phase:gas)

Specific method: examples: Liquid-liquid or partion, Ion exchange, Size exclusion..........

Stationary phase: example: Liquid adsorbed on a solid, Ion-exchange resin.......

Type of equilibrum: example: partion betweeen immiscible liquids, ion exchange........

I do not claim it to be scientificlly correct but good enough as an overview.

Hi,
I would say TLC, GC and HPLC are different chromatography techniques, while HIC, IEX, RP, HILIC, Affinity are different modes of chromatography within the technique of High Performance Liquid chromatography.
