am interested in getting started on the basics of running the GC. i have. all the equipment, standards, protocol.... but am totally virgin on running a GC. need some basic tutorials, books, pointers.........

It is more than reading from a book.

Try a local section of the American Chemical Society for help, or seek help from a Chromatography group in your area.

Go for a group where you can see eyeball to eayball. If you have some one with whom you can visit - or can visit you, it will work much better. You will notice things being done that you'd have never thought to ask about. Training and troubleshooting remotely is tough. How often do you see an exchange on this forum the general flow run wiht several pages on why the instrument does not give a response and the last question is something like "By the way, is this thing supposed to be plugged in to a power outlet?" A difference that can be seen by anyone who can look at what is going on. (OK we've not hit the does it have to be plugged in question, but there have been some interesting meanderings.)

And, if you are trying to come up to speed quickly - pay someone. Find someone at a local university to show you or take the class - or hire a consultant to come in for a few days, be sure your system is ready to go and get you started on the work you are planning to do.

The people I train usually "get" ChemStation setup and use about their third time with GC and fourth time with HPLC (purge operation-all four channels, checking for over 10 bar with aqueous, etc., confuses them).

HPLC software same as GC except for the column under "Instrument".

Operation manuals of olds GCs are grate tutorials teaching concepts , you can get a few in the web,
