What is the purpose of running a RT Standard on an SCD?

For Sulfur analysis, I have to run a RT Standard before running
a calibration curve.

Why do I need to analyze a RT Standard?
So that you know the retention time of the analyte ?, or to confirm that the gas flows, temperatures etc are set up properly ?
