In-line filter and pre-column for UHPLC columns

Discussions about HPLC, CE, TLC, SFC, and other "liquid phase" separation techniques.

Hello,

As we know that sub 2-micron particle UHPLC columns are more prone to clogging compared to columns packed with larger particles. It may not be a big issue for pharmaceutical applications, but will be an issue for environmental and food samples. To protect the analytical column, in-line filters and pre-columns are often desired, but they will add extra-column volume and ruin column efficiency.

I have the following questions and appreciate your insights:

1. Optimize Technologies offers both in-line filters and pre-columns for UHPLC columns. For those who have firsthand experience with these products, are Optimize's products satisfactory for your applications?
2. Besides Optimize, do any other companies offer similar products?

Any comments relating to this subjects are appreciated.

We use the inline filter of Waters without any problems.

Phenomenex.
We analyse 1000's of biological samples (mostly protein crash) and have got excellent results from the Phenomenex Krudcatcher (attached to Kinetex columns)and also the Waters Vanguard Pre-Column (attached to acquity columns.) We also found the Vanguard pre-column to be consistently better in terms of reproducibility and robustness compared to the original Waters in-line filters that we used to use.
I have used the Column Saver from Mac-Mod. They have both conventional HPLC and UPLC versions. It screws directly into the column, and then the tubing goes directly into the filter. Very convenient, no significant dead volume.
