Difference between correlation coefficient and COD

Is it correct to say that correlation coefficient (r) can denote the goodness of fit only when there is no weighting factor used in the linear regression line? If a weighting factor is used, only coefficient of determination (r2) is used instead to denote the goodness of fit. And coefficient of determination can be used in both situations!?

Are there any other differences?
Thanks.

r is simply the square root of r^2. If you know one, you know the other. And neither, by itself (or by themselves) is really useful for goodness of fit.
