What is meant by the chromatography cycling?

The example im thnking about is chromatography cycling in a Protein A chromatography or IEX. I always assumed it was the recycling of the eluate but now im not sure, is it the recycling of the total feed so the waste aswell as the eluate?

If your main peak elutes together with other byproducts you can "cut" your main peak and cycle it, or better bring that segment of your eluat back on the column. Sometimes it is necessary to do that several times until your target compound is clean.
