Can any one explain to me how do metals enhance silanol activity of silica-based stationary phases?

Think of metal cations (postive charge) as pulling electron density back from adjacent silanol oxygens. This makes the silanol hydrogens more weakly bound. Result is a more acidic (lower pKa) silanol.
