On peak intensity normalization

Hello all...This is my first post in the forum.I have recently started working in the field of proteomics. Having no prior experience in the field, I'm encountering occasional problems.

I've encountered the term 'peak intensity normalization' in context of quantitative proteomics.Though intuitively I can understand the purpose of normalization, can somebody let me know what mathematical methods/formulas are used as common normalization techniques?

One normalization technique I know about, is the Z-score (AKA zero mean and unit variance normalization), Do people use other methods too?

Any illustrative example(s) or program scripts (in Perl, R etc.) is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
