Hi everyone

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a program that can read Chemstation data files. My problem is that I can't install the version of Chemstation that I have on my current computer (Win7-64) so now I can't access the whole data set for my thesis. Unfortunately I don't have access to any other computer with an older OS so the only solution I see is if there's a chromatogram reader or such available for 64bit systems that can do it. I've googled but can't find anything so now I was hoping that all the experts on this forum would have some ideas for me.

Any ideas that don't cost a fortune are greatly appreciated!

Do you have access to Windows 7 XP-mode? Tha may allow you to install Chemstation.

No unfortunately I have the Home edition so it doesn't let me do that.

No I didn't even know there was such an option . I will definitely look into that. Is it complicated? Like requiring a software engineer or the like.

installing VM ist not very complicated when it's just about installing a program on a virtual computer. It get's rather difficult if you want to use network, usb or anything. There's a huge Wiki for Oracle VM, it should answer most questions. The installation itself is a step-by-step programm which can also be used by non-software-engineers (like me)!

If you are a recent grad student then perhaps you like things inexpensive, tedious and time consuming. You can export the data (if you can get access to chemstation) as ascii and plot it using excel.

I've written an open source ChemStation alternative called OpenChrom:

A ChemStation file import converter is also available (I've decoded the binary file format ... it was a funny work). You can install it as a plugin afterwards, see:

I know, the software needs a lot of improvements, but it's a beginning. It is available for several operating systems and architectures, also for 64 bit systems. It hopefully helps you.

So in order to run Agilent MSD Chemstation E.02.00.493 on a Win 7 remote computer :

- Install first the win xp mode from Microsoft :

-Follow the win configuration protocole from Agilent :

-Than follow the installation protocole for the CHemstation software :

Don't forget to configure your system in the MS configuration box as a remote one. whereas the software will crash because he won't find any GC or MS connected to the laptop.


Hope that could help somebody as i pass a weekend in order to get it running.

And a supplemental question about the opensource equivalent : Is this open source software more intuitive to use and more handy than this CHestation bullshit...does anybody have an experience using it ?

Do you know anyone running Empower? It has a data convertor to read import and then process Chemstation files.

I also heard of a viewer called Inspector once. I think you can read Chemstation files with that viewer. Try Google with Inspector jcamp and chemstation...should find it.

Our UniChrom allows reading and processing .CH data (all versions) for free.
