What types of separations is octanol used as mobile phase for?

In my lab (I am relatively new here) we have octanol for HPLC. I'd ask but I would likely be told it is for this or that project with no scientific reason.

If you deal with pharmaceuticals at all, octanol-water partition coefficients are a widely used measurement.

As far as HPLC goes, years ago there were reports in the literature that low levels of octanol (a percent or so if memory serves) added to reversed-phase mobile phases speeded up equilibration times. If memory serves, the work came out of Pete Carr's Lab at University of Minnesota.
